People trust in one of two ways to get to heaven: man's way or God's way. Man says we must work for salvation; Paul was an extremely successful example of trying man's way. He was ahead of everyone in living righteously, but he found all his efforts rejected. He learned the only way to have salvation and secure heaven is by trusting in God's death on the cross in our place and receiving His forgiveness.
